College Recruiting 101 - The College Summer Camp

The following is an exerpt on college summer camps and recruiting from the recruiting manual available at www.soccer-recruiting.com :
College summer camps are of immense importance. Too many parents/recruits misuse the camps or don’t use them at all due to costs and limited time in the summer. I would estimate 50% of all college signings attended the camp with the school they signed. Think about the advantages of the summer camp. You get to live on and see the campus for a week. You get to deal with the coaching staff all week. In many cases the higher level players are allowed to play with some of the existing college players during the week. You get 1st hand information about the school, the coaches and the players to see if the college is a good fit. It’s your own personal enhanced recruiting visit and it also shows the college staff that you are serious about their program.
On the other hand it also allows the coaching staff to view your talents for the week. They get to see not only your soccer talents, but also your maturity and confidence. It gives the college staff an extra level of comfort in the recruiting process.
One of the problems with summer camps are that most fall in a narrow range in June and July. Add in the regular club soccer schedule and maybe a summer family vacation and it gets hectic for sure. My best recommendation is to try to attend 2 camps if possible the summer before the senior year. Recruiting at that point has turned to the coming graduation class so you will have the full attention of the coaching staff. The travel schedule will be difficult but a couple of well planned out camps could open doors. I have had 4 players over the last couple of years that have signed with major division 1 colleges such as Kentucky and Air Force where the camp was the main event that led to their recruitment...more important than showcasing or club play.
