Dallas Cup Super Group Final set
Published 4/7/2007 11:08:19 PM by Shane Barrow from SoccerMogul.com
Sao Paolo overwhelmed Real Madrid with speed and numbers while Chelsea used a tight defense and possession to shut down any Southampton hopes in the two Dallas Cup semifinal matches.
Chelsea was clinical in their play with solid possession keeping Southampton on their heels pretty much all night. Simple passes and good spacing forced Southampton to chase the ball all night and when they were able to get ahold of it their distribution was whoefully lacking. The only goal resulted from a questionable goalkeeping decision from Southampton which left an empty net but forced a quality finish from Chelsea for a 1-0 haftime deficit.
The 2nd half saw a Southampton side that never really showed any urgency to get the equalizer and Chelsea was able to win comfortably despite the 1-0 scoreline.
The 2nd game of the night was a different story altogether as Real Madrid was totally overwhelmed by Sao Paolo's speed and transition into the attack. The Spanish side was able to hold a respectable amount of possession in the game but when the ball was turned over the Brazilians swarmed forward leaving Real Madrid to scramble to deal with the numbers. The highlight of the match was an amazing 60 yard shot from midfield after a Real Madrid turnover that caught the Real Madrid keeper out of the net.
The final tomorrow should be very entertaining. Chelsea will be able to hold better possession than Real Madrid were able and Chelsea also seems to have a better organized defense. However I it remains to be seen if it will be enough to deal with the Sao Paolo speed and creativity in attack.
