After wining the first leg of the MLS playoffs 2-1 in Colorado last weekend all FC Dallas needed was a draw in their home leg. Things looked on edge as standout FC Dallas defender Chris Gbandi was sent off for a hard foul just 29 minutes into the match. FC Dallas would be forced to play a man down the entire evening. However, everything looked to be in order for a Western Conference Finals appearance after Carlos Ruiz scored in 48th minute. The goal gave FC Dallas a seemingly safe 3-1 lead in aggregate. Unfortunately FC Dallas decided to relax and paid with their season. It took Colorado less than 10 minutes to pull a goal back through a header from Nicolas Hernandez. Even then FC Dallas still held a 1 goal advantage. With time running out Colorado was able to convert a corner kick into the tying goal. Only 7 minutes from time Hernadez again scored. This time to send the match into overtime.

The drama and excitement was not nearly over as the overtime would show. Only 2 minutes into the first extra period FC Dallas defender Clarence Goodson scored the go ahead goal scoring off a free kick from Greg Vanney. Unfortunately once again Dallas could not hold the lead. In the 114th minute Clint Mathis buried a free kick to send the game to penalties. In the penalties both teams made their first 3 kicks before FC Dallas's Greg Vanney clanked his off the left post. Kyle Beckerman proceeded to make his giving Colorado the advantage. After Simo Valakari made his it set up Aitor Karanka to win the series for Colorado. Dario Sala of Dallas was equal to the task and saved the kick sending it to extra kicks. Ironically Sala himself was called upon for the 6th FC Dallas penalty. His Colorado counterpart Joe Cannon saved the kick once again giving Colorado the chance to win with a make. Up stepped US National Team veteran Pablo Mastroeni who calmly ended the drama and sent Colorado into the MLS Western Conference Finals.
