N. Dallas boys clinch playoff spot
North Dallas scored twice in the first four minutes of the second half propelling it to a 3-1 victory against Thomas Jefferson in a match that determined the third-place playoff seed for District 13-4A.

Following a scoreless first half in which both teams played tentatively, North Dallas came out aggressive. Jose Monjaraz scored off a perfect pass from Eduardo Lopez with 39:11 remaining in the second half. Eduardo Bustos knocked in a cross from Leopoldo Jimenez from the left corner three minutes later. North Dallas took a commanding 3-0 lead at the 26:36 mark when Jair Torres scored off an assist by Bustos.

"It was a make-or-break game, and that's what was on our minds in the first half," North Dallas coach George Berre said. "We started to relax and played beautiful soccer in the second half."

North Dallas plays Frisco in a Class 4A bi-district round match, tentatively set for 7 p.m. Friday at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco.

North Dallas, Thomas Jefferson and Woodrow Wilson tied for second place in District 13-4A. The teams played a round-robin mini-tournament to determine which two teams would advance to the playoffs. Woodrow defeated North Dallas Friday and Thomas Jefferson Monday to take the second-place seed. Hillcrest won district and earned a first-round bye.

FM Marcus 2, Coppell 0: In Coppell, Flower Mound Marcus, SportsDay's top-ranked Class 5A team, completed a perfect regular season by defeating last season's Class 5A runner-up for the second time this season.

Marcus (23-0) scored on a first-half penalty kick by Sean Meller after Sam Garza was fouled. Josh Mensah finished off a nice pass from Andres Angulo for the second score.

"To have a playoff type game in our district can only help us in our playoff run," Marcus coach John Gall said.

Mesquite Horn 2, North Mesquite 1: In Mesquite, Horn won for the third-straight time with two second-half scores to rally to a win in District 12-5A. North Mesquite took a 1-0 halftime lead following a penalty kick by Zach Nulisch. Mesquite Horn followed with a goal by Taylor Tamez and the game-winner by Tyler Hinkle with about 12 minutes remaining.

LD Bell 1 Trinity 0: In the traditionally hardfought rivalry game LD Bell was able to grab a goal midway through the second half on a long throw in. The ball was thrown long on goal from the left side of the box where it slipped through the goalkeepers hands and into the net for the only goal of the game.

Girls

Allen 2, Plano East 0: In Plano, Allen, No. 3 in SportsDay's Class 5A rankings, clinched the District 9-5A title with the victory. Kelsey Claxton and Kelsey Perlman scored for Allen, which won its second-straight district title with a 13-1 district record (19-1 overall). Fifth-ranked Plano East finished third at 9-4 (16-4 overall).

Plano West 6, Rich. Berkner 0: In Murphy, Plano West celebrated "Senior Night" by winning its 10th straight game and securing second place in District 9-5A. Six different players scored for No. 2 Plano West, including seniors Brittany Allen and Caitlin McDowell. Berkner finished fourth and snagged the final playoff spot in 9-5A.

FM Marcus 1, Coppell 1: In Flower Mound, Coppell prevented top-ranked Marcus from completing a perfect District 6-5A season with the tie. Marcus, which clinched the district championship, finished 13-0-1 in district (19-1-3 season). Coppell, which struggled in its final three regular season games with a loss to Hebron and a tie to Flower Mound last week, finished in third place.
