Mississippi Brilla FC recorded its first ever victory on Friday night with a 2-1 win over the Dallas/Fort Worth Tornados. The announced crowd of 1,017 had hardly settled when Mississippi Brilla FC scored first on a beautiful strike by Belhaven graduate Paul Babba in the 5th minute.
The striker from Nigeria got the crowd to its feet early with the blast that hit the underside of the crossbar on its way to finding the back of the net.
“Babba’s strike was a beautiful goal, and really got the crowd into the game early,” said Dave Dixon, Mississippi Brilla FC Head Coach. “It was a great way to begin the game.”
The Tornados answered at the 20-minute mark of the first half when Alex Smith found himself all alone after breaking behind the Brilla back line. Smith’s shot from short distance went through Brilla goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey to find the goal. Bruno Guarda assisted on the goal.
At the 30 minute mark in the first half, Mississippi Brilla FC earned the game-winning goal when Ousmane Coulibaly headed in a nice cross by Madison native Bryson Moore. Coulibaly, a native of Burkina Faso, tallied his first goal of the season after missing the first match last weekend.
“It was another great night for soccer in Mississippi,” said Rusty Bryant, President and General Manager of Mississippi Brilla FC. “The fans are proving that minor league soccer belongs here, and it looks like the team is going to continue doing its part to keep the interest going.”
Mississippi Brilla begins a four game road trip next week with a visit to El Paso for two games. Following away matches at Baton Rouge and New Orleans, the team returns home on Saturday, June 2 for a match against fellow expansion club Baton Rouge.
“Our goal is to return home in a few weeks with a few more wins under our belt,” said Scott Taylor, Director of Soccer Operations. “We hope to be at the top of the standings when we play in front of the home crowd again on June 2.”
