SMU Gives Away Late Lead
Published 10/19/2006 5:42:26 AM by SoccerXpert Staff from Dallas, Texas U.S.A.
The #1 ranked SMU Mustangs scored in the 33rd minute and made the goal stand up until the waning seconds against 16th ranked South Carolina on Wednesday night. Manuel Mariel converted a loose ball in the first half to give SMU the advantage heading into halftime. The two teams battled through the 2nd half when SMU leading 1-0 in the last minute of regulation turned a ball over deep in their own end which Ayo Akinsete of South Carolina converted into the tying goal with only 16 seconds remaining. The teams then played two scoreless overtime periods leading to the 1-1 draw. It was a very physical match as one would expect from a big Conference USA soccer showdown. SMU held a 20-14 shot advantage including a 7-2 advantage in the overtimes but couldn't find the winner. The Mustangs now head out on the road for contests at Memphis and Alabama-Birmingham next week.
