SMU Suffers First Loss
Published 10/27/2006 8:02:58 AM by SoccerXpert Staff from Dallas, Texas U.S.A.
The #1 ranked SMU mens soccer team suffered their first loss of the year in Alabama Wednesday night. The University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers were able to open the scoring in the 13th minute as senior Lukasz Kwapisz was able to get behind the SMU defense and finish a breakaway against SMU keeper Matt Wideman. The lead was shortlived however as UAB was called for a handball in their penalty area only a minute later. SMU's Mynor Gonzalez slotted home the penalty to even the score. The game remained tied into the 2nd half when UAB would score the winner. Carlo Schiavoni took a long free kick from the midfield where it found the head of forward Jerson Monteiro. He flicked on the header which sophomore Trey Gregory was able to lift a over SMU's Matt Wideman for the winning goal. SMU pushed bravely the rest of the match for the tying goal but was unable to find it. A record crowd of over 2,700 saw SMU fall to 14-1-3 on the year. The Mustangs return home tomorrow to close the regular season against Marshall.
