Sam Houston Boys Off to Great Start

Sam Houston boys coach Nuno Passos understood that the soccer community had doubts about his pre-district record. The Texans hadn't enjoyed a lot of success in past seasons, but everything Sam Houston has accomplished so far this season was legitimized Tuesday. In the District 8-5A opener Sam Houston had mighty Martin on the ropes, leading 2-1 with about 10 minutes to play. A late penalty kick converted by Martin's Casey Herd earned a 2-2 draw, but the Texans were left brimming with confidence.
Sam Houston now sits 6-1-1 and the playoffs are more than a dream. "We're just playing our butts off," Passos said. "Tuesday was kind of our coming out party. We're decent. We don't have alot of skill, but they're just doing what they are asked. We bring a lunch box and hard hats, and even though we're not the most skillful, we just come to play."
Sam Houston's midfield features a corps of juniors, Samuel Alvarado, Kevin Villareal, Yasir Mohamed and Jaime Rosales have grown together the previous two years.
The Texans continue 8-5A play tonight against perennial power Duncanville. Passos said if injuries or grades don't hurt the squad, Sam Houston has a real shot at the postseason.
Southlake Carroll not slowed The Carroll Dragons lost 12 seniors from last year's district championship team but don't appear to have dropped in determination. Carroll (9-1) has only one loss to a tough Allen squad heading into tonight's District 5-5A opener at home against Keller Central.
Edgardo Padilla is leading the way with nine goals and seven assists while Chase Westmoreland (six goals), Bob Miltenberger and Rocco Mediate (5 goals each) help drive a dangerous offense.
