Arlington Martin scores late to beat Trinity

Nothing like temperatures in the 20s to ring in the high school soccer season.  Thursday marked the opening of the Richland Winter Blast Tournament with Trinity facing off against Arlington Martin.  With the freezing temperatures and schedule changes there was exactly one single fan in the stands at opening kickoff.

Arlington Martin opened on the front foot, pushing the Trojans back into their own half.  It looked to be along day for the Trinity defense, but then they got their passing game going.   Trinity did a nice job holding onto the ball and stringing some passes together which took the pressure off the defense.  The match began to tilt in favor of the Trojans.

The first good chance fell to Martin after a Trinity turnover near midfield.  Sean Henggeler raced in on goal but rolled his shot straight to the keeper.  The best chance of the opening half came off a Warrior corner kick as a header clipped the post and went wide.  Scoreless at the break.

Once again Martin opened on the front foot earning a corner kick inside ten seconds and producing a good shot from Andre Anasi.  Could they keep the momentum though?   With twenty minutes left to play the Warriors definitely were looking the more likely to score a goal, but the result was still up in the air as seniors Scotty Welch and Dylan Yu were standing strong in the Trinity defense.

Trinity got their only real attack of the game with twelve minutes to play as a Scotty Welch long ball beat the Martin defense.  The Trinity forward raced in on goal, but had his shot saved by the Warrior net minder.  Only a couple of minutes later Martin got their goal.

Trinity center back Dylan Yu blocked a shot and chased the rebound outside leaving the middle of the Trojan defense wide open.  Martin played the ball into the open space where Zach Riley blasted the ball into the net with seven minutes to go for looked likely to be the winner.

Things got worse for Trinity from there as Martin scored again just a couple of minutes later.  This time Sean Henggeler dribbled into the Trojan box before sliding the ball home from a tight angle.  2-0 Martin and the match was done right?  Not quite as Andre Anasi would make it 3-0 before the final whistle.  Talk about a late game collapse from Trinity as Arlington Martin were nowhere near three goals better in this game.
