Birdville rips Argyle, sets up Denton Ryan showdown

A late arrival by Argyle delayed its girls soccer game with Birdville for about 30 minutes Tuesday. It didn't throw the Lady Hawks off their game one bit, especially Stephanie Sorrells.  The team's leading scorer, Sorrells scored four times in a 7-0 victory at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletics Complex. Three of her goals came in the second half, which the Lady Hawks began with a 2-0 lead.

The win moves Birdville to 24-1-0 overall and 10-1-0 in District 11-4A. It also sets up a huge game in North Richland Hills on Thursday with Denton Ryan at 7 p.m. that will decide the district championship in one way or another.

Denton Ryan entered Tuesday's game against Lake Dallas undefeated in district with 40 goals scored and only one goal scored against. That one goal came from Birdville in Ryan's 4-1 victory Feb. 22.

Those four goals that the Lady Hawks gave up also happen to be the only goals they've allowed in district.

"The tiebreaker is goal differential in head-to-head matchups. So we would have to beat them by four goals," Birdville coach Eddie Brown said. "If we win by three it goes to the next tiebreaker, which I think is district goals allowed. The tiebreaker after that is for total goals allowed."

In order for Thursday's game to have so much meaning, Birdville had to make sure it got past Argyle for the second time this season. The Lady Hawks beat the Lady Eagles 3-0 on February 18.

Kaleigh Springer scored a goal in that win and did so again at the 11:55 mark Tuesday. Less than two minutes later Sorrells scored her team-high 17th goal to make it a 2-0 game. She added her second goal at the 32:27 mark on a right-footed beauty from 20 yards out.

Loren Lowe used her left foot from 20 yards out to curl in Birdville's fourth goal 23:42 into the half, less than four minutes before Sorrells collected her third goal. Lowe scored her second goal at the 16:25 mark on an assist from Tiffany Dang, who scored at the 11:40 mark off a near-miss from Lowe.
