Birdville boys slip past Aledo 1-0

All season long, Birdville's boys soccer team has won games with a strong attacking offense. Friday night, in a Class 4A bi-district playoff game against Aledo, the Hawks fell short of their offensive expectations, scoring one goal. But Birdville's defense made that one count, as the Hawks (19-3-4) shut out Aledo (9-11-6) to advance to the area round.

"There was much more defense than I expected," Birdville coach Roger Garcia said. "Our kids had to stand up and meet the challenge. We want to win it with our offense because our defense is always so solid. I thought we would have more goals, but I'll take one. As long as it's one more than the other team."

Birdville had several chances in the first half to get on the board. But Aledo senior keeper James Place made several saves, and the Bearcats held tough. Once, Birdville's Enrique Rangel had an apparent point-blank shot, but an Aledo defender slid through to deflect the ball out of bounds.

Birdville missed on more opportunities early in the second half. Then Rangel gave Birdville their winning goal with 25:22 left in the game.  Enrique Rangel made a deceptive move, faking right and going left, to score the ball, which bounced out of Place's hands and dribbled across the goal line.

"It looks like the ball is tied to Enrique's foot," Garcia said. "He's a really special kid."

Birdville's back line, led by Alex Becerra, kept Aledo from getting a quality look at the goal the rest of the way.
