Brek Shea shows frustration in another loss

The Brek Shea saga continues.  It has not been the best of years for the promising young talent.  He is certainly not taking the losing well at all.

To say this year has been troubling would be an understatement.  It started with so much promise.  Regular appearances with the US National Team.  A wonderful previous MLS season.  The sky was the limit.

Then a disastrous Olympic qualifying tournament followed by an injury that sidelined him for weeks.  Upon return Shea lost his head and fired a ball at a referee earning a three match suspension from MLS.  Last night was just another chapter in the saga.

With Blas Perez injured coach Schellas Hyndman has decided to use Brek as the lone striker.  A position that Brek Shea is totally unfit for.  Yet Hyndman keeps throwing him up there.  Anyone who watched the previous match could see he has no clue up there.

He had as many touches as he had offside calls.  It was painful to watch.  Once again Wednesday he was alone at forward and finally the frustration took over.

Hyndman subbed Shea off in the 64th minute with FC Dallas trailing 2-0 and Brek let his feelings be known.  Shea voiced his displeasure at Hyndman as he exited the field and the two appeared to exchange some sharp words. Shea then proceeded to sit by himself on the end of the bench with a towel wrapped over his head.

After the game, Hyndman declined to make Shea available to the media and did his best to bite his tongue as he fielded a steady stream of questions relating to his young star. "I think it's better that I don't make any comments about [Shea's] performance," he said. When asked what Shea had said to him, Hyndman responded, "I think it's probably better I don't make that comment, either."

So what now?  Do not expect Hyndman to allow the display to go unpunished.  Shea will be suspended.

It's possible that Shea might require a change of scenery if he is to come out positively on the other side. Yet it seems unlikely that MLS would allow one of its young stars to exit the league at a time when his valuation is well below its peak, especially given the current transfer battle that has taken place over another hot commodity, Houston Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron. A trade within MLS seems unlikely as well given Shea's considerable upside.

Personally, I expect both Hyndman and Shea to be gone from FC Dallas soon.  Even with the injuries, FC Dallas has been nothing short of terrible since their 2010 MLS Cup run.  Shea clearly needs a change of scenery and a new challenge.
