Keller Central and Mesquite Poteet battle to draw

You don't often get good matchups early in the high school soccer season, but Tuesday night in Keller we were treated to a clash between two teams with high expectations for 2015 as Keller Central hosted Mesquite Poteet.  Central were a playoff team last year and not far removed from a Regional appearance while Poteet has been to the State Tournament twice in recent years.  Both teams clearly have their sights set upon a playoff season this year.

It was a wild opening half hour as both sides attacked with vigor.  Poteet jumped in front after only four minutes as Travis Avant put in a nice cross that Jesus Armendariz headed home.  A nice goal to open the game from the visitors and not the last time we would hear from Armendariz on the evening.

Credit to Keller Central as they would answer right back.  Striker Fabian Linares got deep down the right into the Poteet penalty area where he cut the ball back for attacking central midfielder Abraham Deandra to rifle past the helpless keeper.  1-1 in the 13th minute of play.

Mesquite would grab the lead back seven minutes later and once again it was Jesus Armendariz.  He cut through the Central box and finished with class making it 2-1.  Armendariz is going to be a handfull this year.

Once again Central would respond almost immediately.  It was a brilliant individual effort from Evan Ripic who beat the Poteet defense off the dribble before scoring a nice goal.  The three-pronged attack of Linares, Ripic and Sean Garcia are going to score a lot of goals this year for sure.  The match went 2-2 to the break in an offensive display from both sides.

Keller Central came out of the locker room flying and pushed Poteet deep into their own half.  Attacks were coming in waves and in the 45th Central had their deserved lead.  A turnover in the back sprung Evan Ripic who raced in on goal.  The Mesquite keeper made the initial save but the loose ball fell perfectly for Fabian Linares to punch home from close range.  3-2 Central.

The home side kept up the pressure and were looking to run away with the match and then disaster struck.  It took Poteet eleven minutes to even get past midfield in the second half, but when they did they produced a goal.  A questionable handball gifted them a free kick 25 yards from the Central goal.  Jesus Armendariz stood over the kick as Central organized their wall.  Armendariz fired a low strike right through the wall and past Josh Starkey in net.  A poorly defended set piece any way you look at it, but a hat trick for Jesus.

Once again the match was all even.  Would either side be able to find the winner?  Keller Central looked to have won it in the final minutes.  A long Calum Sutherland shot bounced in on goal.  The Poteet keeper made a total meal of it and it skipped past him off the post.  The rebound fell perfectly for Oscar Gasca but he volleyed over the crossbar from close range.

The entertaining match would end 3-3.  Next up for Keller Central is a game against local rivals Southlake on Thursday morning at the Winter Blast Tournament while Mesquite Poteet heads for the ultra competitive Frisco ISD Tournament.
