Coppell crunched in State Final

The defending state champions were made to look very ordinary on Saturday in the Texas State 5A final.  A talented side from Fort Bend Clements came in focused and left with the trophy.

After taking care of McKinney Boyd 1-0 in the semifinal match on Thursday, everyone expected Coppell to go take care of business and wrap up their back-to-back state titles.  Fort Bend Clements had other ideas it seemed and were not prepared to roll over.

Fort Bend Clements showed in their semifinal victory that they could definitely score goals against the top quality sides.  Coppell found out first hand as they were roasted for three goals in the title game.

“I’ve got to give credit to Fort Bend. They were unbelievable,” Coppell coach Chad Rakestraw said. “I think, honestly, they played about as perfect as they could.”

Clements jumped ahead in the 19th minute heading home a long throw in.  The game stayed 1-0 until midway through the 2nd half when they got a little breathing room.  Alejandro Saez scored on a left-footed blast from 18 yards.  Clements added another right at the death for the 3-0 margin.  On the other end things just didn't fall Coppell's way.  Plenty of shots and nine corner kicks yielded nothing at all.  A team which had scored multiple goals 21 times this season ended up with a goose egg.

“They were able to get on us early, which was huge,” Rakestraw said, “and they played stellar defense.”
