Coppell survives opening round scare at Grapevine

Grapevine entered the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in all of North Texas.  Sure they were only the #4 seed from their district, but they were on a run of that had not seen them beaten in over a month going 6-0-1 in the last seven matches.  Top it off that they had the home field advantage and it was not much of a reward for the defending state champions from Coppell.

Grapevine threw everything they had at the Cowboys, but in the end Coppell would find the answers in the second half. Coppell trailed at halftime for the first time all season but rallied with three goals in the second half to claim a 3-1 victory in a Class 5A bi-district playoff in Grapevine.

The match went to halftime with Grapevine in the shocking lead 1-0.  Coppell got re-focused at the break though and would mount a furious rally in the second 45.  Reigning player of the year Chris Madden equalized with a goal off a short corner kick, and Justin Todd gave Coppell the lead after getting behind the defense on a throw-in.

“We haven’t been in that situation this year,” Coppell coach Chad Rakestraw said. “We came out flat, and Grapevine did a really good job on us and had a great scouting report. I was proud of our response in the second half.”

Coppell advances to face the winner between Belton and Mansfield in the area round.
