Coppell takes care of Colleyville Heritage 4-2

Tuesday night was senior night in Colleyville as the two best teams in District 7-6A squared off.  Colleyville Heritage honored their graduating class which had the chance to claim quite a scalp as the powerful Coppell Cowboys came calling.

As expected it was all Coppell from the opening whistle as Heritage sat deep with only a single forward.  It had the feeling of a match Colleyville was just trying to survive rather than actually win.  Coppell would bring the ball forward as the home side sat back.  Colleyville would hope to stop them and then launch a long ball and pray the single attacker could outwork and outrun the three Coppell defenders.  Not exactly a recipe for success.

Keeper Adam Gaudet was called into action to make his first difficult save in the 10th minute as he had to dive to his left and push away a dangerous shot.  It wasn't long though before Coppell jumped in front.  A wonderful series of passes beat Colleyville right through the heart of their defense leaving Drew Brinda one on one with a helpless Gaudet.  Brinda easily slotted past Gaudet and into the net for the 1-0 lead.

Within a couple of minutes it was 2-0 with one of the best goals I have seen all season.  Tommy Miller stepped forward from his central defense position winning a loose ball and streaming into the attack.  He wound up and ripped a missile from over forty yards out.  Again Gaudet was helpless as the wonder-strike zipped past and hit the net just under the crossbar.  What a goal.

The match would go to the break with Coppell comfortably ahead by two goals.

Coppell didn't get the message to start the second half though and within 30 seconds Colleyville Heritage pulled a goal back.  Omri Sharf played a ball into Jackson Zeledon who slipped a very nice pass in behind the Coppell defense.  Pavel Salas raced in and expertly finished  to the right corner.

Colleyville Heritage suddenly had life.  Would Coppell be able to regain control of the match or would this be a game?

The answer would come pretty quickly as the Cowboys would regain their two goal advantage at the 50 minute mark.  A long throw in from Tanner Traw was met at the near post by Roberto Arguello who flicked his header past Josh Clarke and into the far corner of the net.  Control regained.

A goalkeeping mistake gifted Coppell their fourth goal as Clarke thought he was Lionel Messi and tried to dribble the Coppell forward at his own six yard box.  It didn't quite work out as the Coppell forward promptly put in a nice tackle to deflect the ball into the goal.

Jackson Zeledon pulled one back in the 77th minute to make the final score 4-2.   Game. Set and match as Coppell confirmed their position as the class of District 7-6A winning 4-2.
