Dallas Cup - Corinthians and FC Dallas stalemate

Ah opening day at Dallas Cup.  For the true lover of the beautiful game it just does not get much better than this.  Each year Dallas Cup provides us wit a look at the future of  if time soccer with a Super Group lineup featuring some of the premier youth teams in the world. This year heavyweights River Plate, Everton, Corinthians and Valencia FC join the top MLS academies of FC Dallas, LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake.

The opening match of Dallas Cup XXXVI gives us FC Dallas against two time champions SC Corinthians of Brazil.  Very few can dispute that FC Dallas has the top youth academy in the United States.  They already have several players that have progressed to the first team and are led by US U17 stud Alex Zendejas.  Corinthians will offer the typical Brazilian skill and flare and should be considered one of the favorites in this talented Super Group field.

The opening half hour was cagey at best.  A typical tournament opening match in fact, with both sides feeling the other out and not wanting to give away an early goal.  Corinthians were getting the better of the ball, but neither side were producing much in the way of attacking chances.

FC Dallas turned Corinthians over in the 29th minute and streamed on the counter attack.  Alejandro Zendejas received a pass and raced into the Brazilian penalty area where he expertly cut the last defender who clipped Zendejas as he slid past.  Zendejas went to ground amidst howls for a penalty kick.  The referee decided against the penalty and play went on.  A big no call for the home side.

Both sides created a chance as the half wound down.  Corinthians Gabriel Vasconcelos whipped a ball through the FCD six while Alex Radilla curled over at the other end.  Halftime Corinthians 0 FC Dallas 0

The second half started with Corinthians on the front foot.  It took less than two minutes to force FC Dallas keeper Matthew Karasinski into a diving save as  Rodrigo DeCarvalho fired from distance.  Just seconds later Karasinski made another diving save on Matheus Vargas.  Finally DeCarvalho blazed over the bar on a ball he really should have scored.  Action stations for the FC Dallas defense as they were being overrun.

FC Dallas had a golden opportunity in the 61st minute after a Corinthians player went down injured.  FCD played on while the Brazilians expected a stoppage in play. The result was a strike from Aaron Meyer that keeper Jose Serrano saved on the short hop.  He left a fat rebound right in front that sat perfectly for Zendejas.  He rifled his shot right into Serrano's chest though and the chance went begging.

The game was up for grabs entering the final twenty minutes of play.  Aaron Meyer got into the Corinthians penalty area before crushing his shot off the side netting.  At the other end the Brazilians produced a wonderful chance as a perfect pass put Carlos Moises DeLima in on goal.  He rolled his shot just wide of the post and the match stayed scoreless.

Dallas almost stole in it in the end. Quite literally as Christian Ramirez stole the ball off Rafael Castro at the top of the Corinthians penalty area.  Castro took a touch and fired at goal.  Once again Jose Serrano was up to the task as he pushed shot aside.

In the 88th Martin Salas saw his second yellow card and the FCD captain was sent packing forcing them to finish a man down.  No drama though as FC Dallas saw out the match for the draw.  A deserved result that neither side can argue.
