Dallas Sidekicks to open season Saturday with Harrisburg

The Dallas Sidekicks have returned from the dead and they will open a new season on Saturday night against the Harrisburg Heat.  The game is scheduled for 7:00 at The Allen Event Center.   The home opener will kick off a 16 game PASL schedule that will include past arch rival the San Diego Sockers who will visit in January.

Sidekicks legend Tatu returns to coach the squad along with several familiar faces.  The roster is huge with a whopping 33 players listed.  Superstar keeper Sagu returns to lead the team in goal while several names from the past dot the roster.  Old-timers Nick Stavrou, Patrick Shamu, Shawn David, Chad Deering and Mike Uremovich are on the squad.  Truthfully, we should be watching their kids play rather than them.  It makes me worry that we are right back to the "good old boys" network that ruined the franchise in the first place years ago.

These guys are old!  There is a reason the birth years are not on the roster page as a third of the roster is over 35 years old.  Hopefully they can keep pace in the fast indoor game.  We will see on Saturday.

The PASL is made up of four divisions.  The Sidekicks are in the central division along with Rockford, Rio Grand Valley, Texas Strikers from Beaumont and Chicago.  Last year the San Diego Sockers rolled to a perfect 16-0 regular season record before beating Detroit in the championship match.  It was the third straight PASL title for the Sockers who enter this season on a 36 match winning streak.

It will be interesting to see how the new franchise performs.  Hopefully the Sidekicks are well received and can rekindle some of the good old days when indoor soccer was loved in DFW.
