FC Dallas and Texans fall to open Super Group play

Both FC Dallas U18 and Dallas Texans U18 dropped their Dallas Cup XXXI Super Group openers.  FC Dallas fell 4-2 to Chelsea while Dallas Texans U18 lost 2-1 to Tottenham.  Both teams put up valiant efforts against the two powerful youth sides from England, but it was not to be.

Elsewhere in Super Group play, The US 91/92 national team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Mexico 91/92 national side.  A very questionable referee decision in the first half had a huge impact on the match.  A long ball to the top of the American penalty area led to a Mexico player going down easily.  The referee from New Zealand awarded a penalty kick and then proceeded to red card the US player.  Firstly, the original call was iffy at best. Secondly, the foul was probably just outside the area rather than inside.  And finally, there was absolutely no reason to send the player off.  American keeper Zac McMath saved the penalty kick, but the influence on the match had occured as the US were forced to play 60 minutes with 10 men.

Mexico grabbed the winner within two minutes of halftime when a corner kick was headed into the American goal.   Mexico created a couple of more chances with the extra man, but as the second half wore on the US began pushing forward.  The final 15 minutes saw the US with several chances including a header from Kofi Sarkodie that clanged off the crossbar in the 90th minute.

Mexico sides CF Monterrey and Chivas both won their openers while the third Mexican side, Tigres, fell 3-2 to the Japan 91/92 national side.  Cruzeiro of Brazil won a tight contest against American side CZ Elite 2-1.

On Monday the US nationals face Vancouver at 2:00 while Mexico plays Eintracht Frankfurt from Germany at 4:00 in Super Group play.
