Daniel Hernandez has no plans to retire soon

Even though some think 2012 might be his last year as a player in Major League Soccer, Daniel Hernandez begs to differ. The 35 yr old Tyler native has been FC Dallas’ captain for the last two seasons and signed a three year contract this off-season, guaranteeing him at least one more season as a player before transitioning into a coaching role.

However, if the SMU product has anything to say about it, he won’t be hanging up his boots anytime soon. “I plan on playing at least two more years after this,” Hernandez said. “Unfortunately, the only thing the team would guarantee me as a player is this year. But by no means do I plan on retiring this year at all. I have no desire at all to retire after this year.”

He has been practicing with FC Dallas for several weeks but has not been cleared for game action after having off-season knee surgery. “I go back to the doctor on Monday and hopefully get a full release because I haven’t been able to play in the games yet,” he said. If all goes according to plan, Hernandez figures to make his preseason debut Wednesday night against SMU at Westcott Field.
