Denton Guyer girls roll into State Championship match

Well this one was a mismatch.  The Denton Guyer girls rolled over an outgunned Magnolia 4-2 Thursday afternoon in a cold and wet State 4A semifinal in Georgetown.

Truthfully the game was not nearly as close as 4-2 would indicate.  Guyer controlled the match from start to finish.  Denton Guyer was much more athletic than the Magnolia girls winning almost every single loose ball and physically dominating the match.

After pounding away for 30 minutes Guyer put the game away in the final ten minutes of the opening half.  Then came the punch as Denton Guyer scored three times to take a 3-0 lead at the break.

“It looked like if we remained patient, we were going to get one in and we finally did, and the dam usually breaks at that point and it did,” Guyer coach Kenny Blevins said.

Hannah Alspach and Brittany Crabtree bossed the play and the three goals came from them.  The opener was a long range blast from Alspach that beat the Magnolia freshman keeper Sarah Hubble.  The next two came in quick succession from Crabtree.

Magnolia opened the second half with a push and got on the board when Allison Abendschein headed home a long freekick.  It was Magnolia's first attempt on goal all night long.

Guyer would quickly take back over the game though and Magnolia would have trouble even getting to midfield for long stretches.  The fourth goal came in the 59th minute as a close range poke from Crabtree came off Hubble and fell perfectly for Taylor Heaton to smash home.

It was celebration time from there as Guyer subbed freely and let the rest of the roster get involved.  Magnolia snatched a late consolation goal just before the end, but the result was never in doubt.

Denton Guyer will now face the powerful girls team from Highland Park, the defending 4A state champions. Highland Park is playing in its eighth state tournament and carries a 48-game unbeaten streak into the state championship game.
