DFW Tejanos 97s win Denver Cup 2014

The DFW Tejanos 97 boys were looking forward to a wonderful senior season after tying for the Dallas Classic League D2 title last year and earning promotion to Division 1 for their final year. They were surprised on July 1st as the 18 year old club merged into Dallas Texans, but that did not prove to be anything more than a small speed bump for this talented group.

Having a very tight team the group had no problem meeting the roster requirements to take the squad independent for their final year.  The only requirement was they add Independiente to their name.

After picking up four very talented players from Dallas Texans South, the team was ready to test their quality as they headed to Colorado for Denver Cup 2014.  The boys opened with a convincing victory over a squad from Mumbai, India running out 5-0 winners.  Sean Garcia notched a pair of goals in the win.

The team went on to claim 2-0 and 3-1 wins to take spot in the group and set up a final showdown with Colorado Rush.  The match went back and forth the entire first half as the two sides fought out a tactical battle with Rush playing 4-4-2 against the 5-3-2 of Tejanos.  The pivotal moment came as the match was approaching halftime when the Tejanos earned a free kick just outside the Rush penalty area.  Patrick Nuss stepped up and expertly curled the ball around the wall and into the right corner for the lead.

From there it was all about the Tejanos defense as they stifled every Colorado Rush attack.  Goalkeeper Adam Gaudet dealt with the cross and finish by punching several balls to safety while the back line of Scotty Welch, Holden Flora, Danny Chicas and Colin Maloney were smothering.  The team ended the Denver Cup with a dominating 11-1 goal differential and got goals from six different players.  Next up is the Plano Labor Day Tournament before heading into Dallas Classic League play.
