FC Dallas hangs on for draw at Chivas

This was not the result FC Dallas were looking for.  Granted they were on the road, but it was last place Chivas USA.  A game FCD simply had to win to stay in the playoff race for the final spot in the MLS Western Conference.

Instead, Dallas ended up hanging on by a thread to even escape with a draw.  Keeper Kevin Hartman made three monster saves in the closing minutes of the match to save the day and preserve the single point.

Dallas came out flying and dominated the opening half of play.  Unfortunately after all the good play they only held a 1-0 lead.  Playmaker David Ferreira controlled it, had space and fired a shot on goal. Dan Kennedy dived and made the save, but left the rebound for Blas Pérez, who easily knocked it into an empty net for the game’s first goal.

Chivas mount a fight in the 2nd half.  With Juan Pablo Ángel replacing José Correa, the veteran’s presence was an instant spark for Chivas. In the 66th minute, Angel tested Hartman with a potent shot from 10 yards out but FC Dallas’ Kevin Hartman made a save, diving and knocking the ball over the crossbar.

Then came the goal.  Nick LaBrocca played the ball out wide right to Miller Bolaños, who had been dangerous throughout the second half. The Ecuadorian midfielder then sent a ball across the goal area that Hartman appeared to get a piece of but not enough to stop its momentum. Unmarked, Villafaña knocked the ball into the back of the net.

FC Dallas now sit four points back of Vancouver.  Each side has two games remaining, which means FC Dallas must have at least one win and one draw over their final two (at Seattle and vs. Chivas) while hoping Vancouver drops its last two (vs. Portland and at Real Salt Lake).
