FC Dallas opens MLS season beating Montreal 3-2

Break out the popcorn.  The new MLS seasons upon us.  This year's version of FC Dallas looks as entertaining as ever.  Offensive players all over the pitch.  Fabian Castillo, Blas Perez, Mauro Diaz and we didn't even see Andres Escobar until the 80th minute.

What the match showed us though is defending looks to be a major issue.  For every good attack, they gave up one it seemed.  Wonderfully entertaining, but not so good for making the playoffs perhaps.  Please return soon George John.  Moises Hernandez was lost all night long at center back.  Where was Walker Zimmerman?  He is light years better.

It only took a few minutes for the bad defense to rear its ugly head.  Jair Benitez rescued the team by blocking two shots off the goal line but minutes later a cross found Sanna Nyassi  unmarked on the back post for an uncontested finish.

Dallas responded in grand fashion though as Fabian Castillo completely took over the game.  He was having his way flying down the left flank and in the 16th minute he tied the match.

Only minutes later FCD grabbed the lead as Mauro Diaz snaked into the Montreal penalty area where he was bungled down earning a penalty kick.  Blas Perez stepped up and blasted the spot kick home and it was 2-1 to the home side.

The second half opened with Dallas on the attack and within two minutes they had earned a free kick just outside the Impact box.  Mauro Diaz stepped up and curled a perfect free kick over the wall and into the net making it 3-1.

Montreal would strike back amidst a bit of controversy.  FCD's Hendry Thomas went down with an injury and needed to be removed.  Despite having Michel ready to go in, the referee restarted play forcing Dallas to play short.  Montreal went straight down the field and scored while Dallas was short their holding midfielder.  On the goal, Andrew Wenger reacted quicker than Moises Hernandez rising to head home the goal past the diving Chris Seitz.

From there FC Dallas had to hang on for dear life as they weathered several Impact attacks and corner kicks.  Already missing Hendry Thomas it was evident that there is a shortage of shutdown players needed to close out a match for Dallas.  They survived with the 3-2 victory.

Entertaining stuff for sure and a solid win on home turf.  Definitely some defensive work to do, but it is only the first game of the year.  Offensively this teams going to be fun to watch and a nightmare to play against.  Next week Dallas travels to Kansas City to face the defending MLS champions before returning home the following week to play Chivas USA in Frisco.
