FC Dallas rallies past the Portland Timbers

Finally. Home sweet home.  A second half rally lifted FC Dallas to a 2-1 victory over visiting Portland Timbers Wednesday night in Frisco as FCD broke a three game losing streak in which they failed to even score a single goal.

It looked like tha bad times were going to continue as Portland took a very early lead.  A scramble in the Dallas six yard box left the ball at the feet of Luca Melano who squared to Diego Valeri for an easy finish.  Just like that in only three minutes FC Dallas were once again behind.

Credit to the team as they went right back to work and created several good scoring chances in the opening half.  The final ball would let them down every time though and the match would go to the break 1-0 to the Timbers. Portland came into the night with no road wins as well as not a single shutout in any game this season.  Did we really think this scoreline would hold?

Coach Oscar Pareja replaced Max Urruti with Tesho Akindele to start the second half and the team came out energized.  Portland were on their heels and within a couple of minutes FC Dallas would find the net twice to take the lead.  It would not be the vaunted Dallas attackers who would be the heroes though.  It would be two goals from two defenders that would flip the score.

Ryan Hollingshead would make it 1-1 in the 55th minute. The goal would involve a fortuitous bounce and a quality finish.  Hollingshead got to the top the Portland penalty area and tried to slip a pass Michael Barrios, but the ball deflected off a Timbers defender and came right back to Hollingshead who had a touch and curled home with the outside of his right foot.  The FCD scoring streak was finally over after a whopping 347 minutes of play.

Almost immediately Dallas would jump in front of the shocked visitors.  A Mauro Diaz corner kick found Walker Zimmerman who rose and buried a header.  I think there still must be concern despite the win.  Both goals came from defenders. The once powerful FCD attack still is not producing goals from the attacking players.

It was a much needed 2-1 victory for FC Dallas who arrived home from a disastrous three game road trip.  Hopefully the team can keep it going on the weekend when they welcome the Seattle Sounders to Frisco Saturday night.
