FC Dallas sends Real Salt Lake packing from MLS playoffs

The MLS champions have fallen.  FC Dallas went into Rio Tinto and shocked the defending MLS champions Real Salt Lake earning a 1-1 draw and winning the playoff matchup 3-2 on aggregate.  Few experts gave FC Dallas any chance of holding on having to hold onto a one goal advantage in Utah where RSL are basically invincible.

Instead FC Dallas went in searching for an early goal and they found it.  In the 17th minute David Ferreira laid a long pass ahead to Brek Shea, who started for the first time since Sept. 15. Shea chested the bouncing ball to Dax McCarty, who beat keeper Nick Rimando.  The home side were clearly shocked and Dallas were able to easily see out the first half with the two goal aggregate lead.

The second half was to be different though as Real Salt Lake showed their mettle and attacked in waves.  FC Dallas sat back and looked for counter attacks, but it was all RSL.  Dallas keeper Kevin Hartman made save after save and FCD put everything they had behind the ball.  Finally with 15 minutes to play RSL found a goal as Robbie Finley scored from close range.

It was action stations from there as Dallas clung on for dear life as RSL sent cross after cross into the Dallas penalty area.  In the end it was to be the visitors night as they held out for the 3-2 aggregate victory.  The champions are out and FC Dallas moves on to face Seattle or the LA Galaxy.
