FC Dallas & San Jose draw as three see Red

One thing you have to respect about FC Dallas is that they are who they are.  It does not matter if they are at home on the road, FCD always play fast, open, attacking soccer.  They are always entertaining.  Sunday night in San Jose was no different.

Chances came fast and furious as both teams attacked with abandon.  Each were called into making goal saving clearances.  I remember after thirty  minutes wondering how this game was still 0-0.  It cold have just as easily been 3-3.  The defenses managed to keep clean sheets to halftime despite the attractive end to end play.

Things took a turn in the 52nd minute when Cordell Cato put in a low cross that Dallas keeper Dan Kennedy dove off his line to cut off.  Kennedy cleanly handled the ball as Sherrod raced in.  Sherrod bungled into Kennedy despite having a couple of steps to easily avoid the keeper who was on the ground.  As Sherrod was attempting to go over Kennedy the keeper raised up causing Sherrod to clumsily put his boot into the head of Kennedy and stomp downwards as he lost balance.

 It looked bad and was certainly clumsy.  Sherrod should have avoided the confrontation.  When the referee showed a red card Sherrod looked dumbfounded.  Was it a bit harsh? Yes.  But Sherrod has nobody to blame but himself.  San Jose were down to ten men for the final 35 minutes.

Oscar Pareja responded by introducing the wonderful Fabian Castillo to the match to exploit the man advantage.  Castillo missed last week's game with a knock, but looked as energetic as ever upon entering.

The Earthquakes were still getting plenty of attack despite the disadvantage.  It is just a function of how FC Dallas plays.  They will always allow some space to get into.  Would either team be able to find the winning goal was the question?

The home side almost jumped ahead in the 75th minute as a curling Shea Salinas free kick caused trouble.  It took Matt Hedges to clear the ball off the line before it rolled into the net.  Moments later  both teams were on ten men as Javon Watson was shown red for his encounter with Cordell Cato.  As Watson tried to race off on a counter attack, Cato made a sliding tackle.  Watson was late and raked his cleat across the leg of Cato.  Easy opportunity for the referee to even the game and he did.

Fabian Castillo had a glorious chance to win it in the 86th minute as he raced around the right side of the SJ defense only to see his shot hit side netting.  Soon after the Earthquakes were shown their 2nd red card of the evening as JJ Koval flew in on a reckless tackle on Ryan Hollingshead.  A nasty cleats up tackle that forced the Earthquakes to finish on nine men.

Did Dallas have time to win it in stoppage time?

The answer was no as a wildly attacking match that also had three players sent off somehow ended scoreless.  A road point for FC Dallas.  A point on the road is never a bad thing I guess.
