FC Dallas rolls on beating New England 1-0

FC Dallas extended their unbeaten streak to nine games defeating the New England Revolution on a second half Marvin Chavez goal at Pizza Hut Park. Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman recorded his MLS record 100th career shutout with a quiet night in the net only having to face two shots.

From the opening whistle, Schellas Hyndman’s Dallas side outplayed the struggling Revolution, peppering the Revs goal with numerous shots in the opening 45. The visitors were content to play defensively and work to stop Dallas rather than go for the victory.

Forward Fabian Castillo caused all kinds of trouble for the Revolution defense, particularly centerback Ryan Cochrane, dribbling at defenders with speed. But it was not the 18 yr old Colombian who found the back of the net for the home side.

In the 68th minute, Castillo found Marvin Chavez along the right side of the field, and the Honduran international did the rest. Deep near the byline, he spun defender AJ Soares with a speedy step over and cut fown the endline toward the Revs goal.  With everyone expecting Chavez lay the ball back across goal,  he instead slotted near post and past goalkeeper Matt Reis who was caught cheating toward the middle.

The goal was Chavez’ first of the year and fourth career goal for Dallas. The score line may have been worse for the Revolution if not for the performance of Reis who, despite being burned for the goal, made eight saves.

Missing from the Revolution lineup was US international Benny Feilhaber, who suffered a sprained ankle a week ago, while Dallas were without right back Jackson, who was in Brazil to marry his longtime girlfriend.

Dallas, who put together a 19-game unbeaten streak last season, have now not lost since April 17 at Portland. With the win, they solidify their second-place position in the West, now just five points behind the conference-leading LA Galaxy.

For the Revolution, the result marks their third straight loss as the team remains mired in the middle of the Eastern Conference.  Dallas play again at Pizza Hut Park next Sunday against Sporting Kansas City.
