FC Dallas Blasts Beckham and LA 4-0

For much of the year, FC Dallas has struggled to score goals. But that all changed on Sunday against the Los Angeles Galaxy as the Hoops got two goals from Kenny Cooper and one each from Dominic Oduro and Abe Thompson in a 4-0 win at Pizza Hut Park, giving head coach Schellas Hyndman his first MLS victory.

Cooper scored both goals in a two-minute span early in the first half, giving him 11 for the season, now one behind LA's Landon Donovan for the MLS Golden Boot.  For much of the last few weeks, rumors have swirled around the possible transfer of Cooper and teammate Juan Toja to Europe. On Sunday, Cooper returned to the starting 11 for the Hoops while Toja wasn't on the 18-man gameday roster after suffering a contusion in his left quadriceps during the MLS All-Star Game on Thursday night in Toronto.

Looking for a way to slow down the most potent offense in Major League Soccer in the Galaxy, Hyndman employed a 4-4-2 formation for the first time since the first half of a June 26 draw at Houston. In Toja's spot, Hyndman went with rookie Eric Avila, who was making his first MLS start.   Galaxy head coach Ruud Gullit also made one change to his starting 11. Eduardo Dominguez came in for Troy Roberts, making his first MLS start in the center of defense.

Cooper's first tally came after he got the ball five yards outside the Galaxy box. The FCD striker then dribbled to the inside and with LA defender Ante Jazic watching, Cooper smoked a low shot into the right side of the net past a diving Kevin Cronin to give the hosts an early edge.   However, the 6-foot-3 all-star forward wasn't done yet. Just two minutes later, Cooper dispossessed Dominguez, who was making his league debut for the visitors. After dropping it off to Oduro, his teammate returned the favor, feeding Cooper inside the top of the arc and he side-footed a shot past Cronin.

It was the first time that the Hoops had scored first in a span of five games. FCD last drew first blood in a 1-0 win against Chicago on June 15 when Cooper found the back of the net in the 17th minute for what proved to be the deciding tally.   Oduro added his fifth goal of the year in the 36th minute. The sequence began when Cooper sent a nice pass to Arturo Alvarez in the FCD half, who then split open the Galaxy defense as Oduro raced into Galaxy's end of the field. The FCD forward then carried into the box and around a diving Cronin near the six-yard box, slotting the ball into the net from a tight angle on the right.

The offensive outburst was the most goals by FCD in the first half since May 20, 2006, when the Hoops netted four in the opening 19 minutes of a 4-0 win over New England. The Hoops outshot LA by a 10-4 margin in the half, with none of the Galaxy's efforts on target. Cooper led the way with four shots while Alvarez and Andre Rocha had two attempts apiece.   It also marked only the second time that the Hoops had scored three goals in a game this year. The last time FCD did that was in a 3-3 draw at Houston back on April 6.

Dallas clearly wasn't content with a 3-0 advantage and early in the second half, the Hoops continued pushing for more goals. In the 47th minute Oduro nearly netted his second of the game when a scorcher from about 15 yards out hit the crossbar and bounced out to Cooper, whose shot was saved by the LA 'keeper.   In the 61st minute came what was likely the Galaxy's best chance of the evening. David Beckham hit one of his trademark perfect crosses to Buddle near the far post. Buddle headed the ball in a downward motion but FCD goalkeeper Dario Sala was there to make his first save of the night.

Then in the 71st minute, Beckham took what was the first corner of the game for either side. It nearly paid off for the Galaxy after Beckham struck a great ball that Carlos Ruiz got to, but his header hit the right post.   In the 84th minuter, Cooper laid a pass off to Avila, who launched a shot from about 20 yards that hit the crossbar.  But FC Dallas wasn't to be denied. Just before regulation time ran out, Thompson made it 4-0 with a scintillating strike from about 20 yards out. After Chase Wileman, who was making his MLS debut, fed him the ball on the right side, Thompson took about five steps to his right before hitting a shot that curled inside the far side of the net.  With the win, the Hoops moved to 1-1-3 under Hyndman, who got his first MLS victory in his fifth try. FCD also avoided going winless in July for only the second time in club history
