FC Dallas gets solid draw in Kansas City

With the huge CONCACAF Champions League semifinal looming midweek against Pachuca, Coach Oscar Pereja chose to field a young side on the tough trip to Sporting Kansas City offering chances for some of the reserves and youngsters to shine in a big game. Seven lineup changes were made from the opening win against the LA Galaxy. Boy did his faith pay off as the roster depth was on full display as FC Dallas earned a solid draw in a very tough venue. It could be an important point when all is said and done in MLS play. Very few teams go to Kansas City and get a result.  With such a busy early season run of matches FC Dallas would need to show just how much they have strengthened their roster from a year ago.

Three FC Dallas players made their MLS debuts on the night as Paxton Pomykal, Jacori Hayes and Carlos Cermeno took the field for the first time. In fact, Pomykal became the youngest player to start a game for FCD at barely past the age of 17.

FC Dallas played smartly from the opening whistle allowing Sporting Kansas City to have the ball in non-dangerous areas. Then stiffen in the final third and hit the home side on the counter.  A couple of early chances went beggin for FC Dallas as Matt Hedges headed a corner straight to the keeper and then new striker Christian Colman fired off the post on a dynamic counter attack.  Sporting KC did better in the second half forcing young Dallas keeper Jesse Gonzalez into more action. But in the end a scoreless draw was probably a fair result.

“The first thing for them was to have personality in the game,” Pareja said, after Saturday night's scoreless draw with Sporting Kansas City. “This is one of the harder atmospheres in Major League Soccer, and against a team with a lot of intensity they needed to come out today and play big. I asked them for a lot of personality and belief in what they are, and we're really proud of their job.”

With four points from two very difficult road games, FC Dallas has confirmed they are once again a power to be reckoned with in the MLS this year.  Attention now turns to a very good Pachuca squad who comes to Frisco Wednesday night for the CONCACAF Champions League semifinal opening leg.  Expect a wonderfully entertaining, wide open match!
