Revitalized offense looking to carry FC Dallas

There is optimism in Frisco as FC Dallas readies to open the 2013 MLS season tomorrow as they host the Colorado Rapids at Pizza Hut Park.  After a couple of years where injuries and a clear lack of attacking depth ruined seasons, management looks to have finally addressed the problem.

The squad finally looks to have a solid stable of strikers.  So much so that an injury should be able to be overcome.  Coach Hyndman will even have the comfort of knowing that playing a 4-4-2 with a pair of strikers is a quality option.  Blas Perez returns to lead the attack.  Last year despite fighting through injuries, Perez notched 9 goals in 19 starts.  This year he will have help.

Returning to Dallas is longtime fan favorite and hometown boy Kenny Cooper.  Discarded as a salary cap move, Cooper was snatched by FC Dallas on the cheap.  Ridiculous for a player who scored a whopping 18 goals last year and is deadly inside the 18.  Perez and Cooper should give Dallas a pair of potent finishers.

Brek Shea was lost from the midfield as he made the move to the
English Premier League joining Stoke City.  He will be lost, but most will agree he was as much a headache as help last MLS season.

The rest of the attacking midfield looks quite dangerous.  Former MLS MVP David Ferreira should be in fine form once again and be at the top of the MLS assist leaders.  Wingers Fabian Castillo and the fiery Jackson are back also.

Holding midfield has been a question.  Longtime captain Daniel Hernandez has retired.  Peter Luccin, signed from France, has been questionable at best so far in preseason.  Look for Andrew Jacobson, Bobby Warshaw or Je-Vaughn Watson to man the position at the start of the season.

The defense returns intact with Jair Benitez, Matt Hedges, George John and Zach Loyd.  There is hope that veteran Ugo Ihemelu could return to action later this season as well.

Finally, the goalkeeper position.  FC Dallas shocked locals when they let longtime MLS star Kevin Hartman go this offseason.  Sure he is in his upper years, but it was hard to argue against his quality.  The club wanted to get younger they, and that they did.  In comes Peru National Team goalkeeper Raul Fernandez. He has been really good in the preseason with some fabulously athletic saves.  Though Coach Hyndman has yet to commit to a starter between Fernandez and Chris Seitz, look for Raul Fernandez in the net tomorrow.

The Colorado Rapids come to town much like FC Dallas.  Coming off a disappointing season, but full of promise and hopes.  Colorado added Edson Buddle, Atiba Harris and Ecuador defender Diego Calderon to their side, but also lost stars Omar Cummings and Jeff Larentowicz.  FC Dallas should be clear favorites to grab the three points Saturday night at FC Dallas Stadium.
