FC Dallas rallies past Vancouver with two late goals

FC Dallas rallied from an early deficit and then won in dramatic style to claim a 3-1 win over the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps.  It was a huge match with playoff implications.  Both teams sitting outside the playoff positions needing a monster three points to stay relevant.

After an early goal from Daigo Kobayashi in the 4th minute it looked like it might be a troubling night for the home side.  They got about the task at hand and evened the match within minutes though as Je-Vaughn Watson blasted home from outside the 18.  The timely goal put the match on even terms and allowed FCD to take the match to the Whitecaps.

From there Dallas controlled much of the match, but were unable to break through the Vancouver defense despite the possession.  It looked like the game was headed to a 1-1 draw which would have been a worthless result for Dallas.

Then a moment of magic broke the match with only minutes remaining.  A nice pass from substitute Eric Hassli freed Fabian Castillo down the left.  He raced into the box and lifted a deft ball to the backpost where Mauro Diaz was racing in.  Diaz smashed the full volley into the net and Dallas were on their was to the victory.

A ridiculous stoppage time goal would make it 3-1.  Dallas broke out on a counter and as Jair Benitez reached the midfield stripe he saw Vancouver keeper David Ousted off his line.  He launched a long shot from over 50 yards out and watched as it flew over Ousted and into the net for an amazing goal.

"This was a game, tonight's game, that is so very important for the team," Hyndman told reporters after the match. "It's not just the three points, it's the confidence that the players have right now, the feel-good attitude and the belief that they have in each other."

Season Salvaged?
Well possibly.  A tough two match road stretch awaits with games at Chicago and Colorado.  Get through that with at least three points and the playoffs are a possibility.  Get less than three points on the trip and it is trouble in Kansas.  Yes FC Dallas won a great game last night, unfortunately out of the 5 teams ahead of them in the MLS Western Conference standings 4 of them won.  So despite the great result, FCD got little more than a confidence boost.
