FC Dallas rallies past Revolution to win home opener

With such a crazy early season schedule nobody would have been surprised to see FC Dallas slip up sometime.  The team has already logged seven early season matches between MLS and CONCACAF Champions League.  Not this team though.  They are finding a way to get results every time out.

Sunday brought the MLS home opener as the New England Revolution visited Frisco.  FCD had previously gone on the road in MLS play earning a win in Los Angeles and a draw at Sporting KC.  A loud and capacity crowd greeted them Saturday night.  Just like in Wednesday night's Champions League match against Pachuca, FCD were to fall behind.  An early Lee Nguyen penalty kick put the visitors in front.

It looked like it just might be one of those nights as Dallas did not even register a shot on goal in the entire opening half of play.  Crazy for such an offensively gifted team.  Things would change after the restart though.

Coach Oscar Pareja introduced Michael Barrios and Tesho Akindele to the match and FC Dallas began attacking the Revolution who became increasingly pinned into their own half of the pitch.  After absorbing pressure for several minutes New England could hold up no more with Max Urruti striking twice in a five minute span.  The tide finally turned for Dallas in the 71st minute, when Maynor Figueroa launched a perfect long bomb to Barrios, who ran a fly route up the right flank. The 60-yard pass cleared the last defender by centimeters and Barrios brought the ball down in stride. New England goalkeeper Cody Cropper charged off his line to take the ball off of Barrios’ foot and the Urruti latched onto the loose ball, walked to his right and split a pair of New England defenders for his second goal of the MLS season. Urruti stole the show six minutes later, swiping the ball from a New England defender and roofing a shot into the top of the NE net as the crowd went wild.

“It was one of those familiar nights with our team where we have to come back from moments that are difficult,” Pareja said. “And one more time, I won’t get tired to say that the character of this team surprises me more and more.”

FC Dallas moved to 2nd place in the Western Conference standings sitting only behind the Portland Timbers who have a perfect three wins from three so far.  The group will now get a much needed two week break.  Next up is the all-important Champions League return leg with Pachuca in Mexico on Tuesday night April 4th.
