FC Dallas and SMU met for their annual scrimmage this weekend with both sides looking at a bevy of players. SMU struck first but the MLSers rallied for a 3-1 victory. A great early goal from SMU star Arthur Ivo opened the scoring just 15 minutes in as he made Zach Loyd look silly before firing past Kevin Hartman.
The lead was shortlived though as FC Dallas struck right back. A perfect Brek Shea cross was headed home by Milton Rodriguez and the game went to halftime 1-1. FC Dallas made wholesale changes at the break and the new guys went to work after halftime.
In the 56th minute FC Dallas took the lead when young stud Ruben Luna forced a turnover in the SMU backline before putting the ball into the net. He would assist on te 3rd FCD goal a few minutes later as Paul Ogunyemi scored and the final was 3-1.
“[Luna had] a great goal," FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman said. "It wasn’t something that we developed. It was just his intensity and his determination. He fought to get the ball loose from an SMU defender and what a great finish.”
FCD now embark on a seven-day trip to Florida, where they'll prepare for the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic in Buena Vista. The tournament, which also features Toronto FC, the Houston Dynamo and USL side Orlando FC.
