FC Dallas makes statement with win over LA Galaxy

The hot start to 2013 of FC Dallas gained true legitimacy on Saturday night as they knocked off defending MLS champions LA Galaxy in front of a capacity crowd at FC Dallas Stadium.  It is time to start taking this team seriously I think.

After a quiet first half that saw very few chances from either side, the match sprung to life after the break.  The turning point came in the 60th minute when Galaxy defender made a total mess out of a nothing ball.  A long ball in behind the defense turned Leonardo towards his own goal where all he had to do was put a simple header back to his waiting goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini.  Instead he let the ball bounce several times and Blas Perez raced around him and looked to be in on goal.  Leonardo panicked and pulled Perez down.  Penalty kick.  Red card.

Unfortunately Kenny Cooper's penalty kick was poor at best and Cudicini made an easy save to keep the match scoreless.  Dallas had the man advantage though.

It looked like the golden opportunity would be lost though as only minutes later a nifty move from young Jose Villareal earned the Galaxy a penalty kick of their own.  Landon Donovan stepped up to the spot only to see Raul Fernandez dive to his left and make the nice save.

Both teams with blown penalty kicks, but still time to play.

And it would be FC Dallas that took advantage as they grabbed a late winner.  A driven Michel corner kick was headed off the crossbar by Eric Hassli.  The loose ball fell to the the backpost where the onrushing George John headed home the match-winner.

A monster three points for FC Dallas in their quest for respect.

The win leaves FC Dallas on top of the MLS Western Conference standings.  Don't look now but they are actually opening up a little gap at the top after only 7 games.

FC Dallas remains at home next weekend with a match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC next Saturday evening at FC Dallas Stadium 7:30.
