FC Dallas stuns LA Galaxy in US Open Cup semifinal

Wow What a finish.  FC Dallas rallied in the the second period of overtime scoring twice in the final five minutes to stun the LA Galaxy and advance to the final of the US Open Cup.  The loss left the Galaxy speechless as they looked to have booked their own place in the final only to see the visiting team from Texas snatch it away in the dying seconds.

It was an end to end affair that saw both teams create plenty of chances.  Neither were able to find the back of the net though as some solid goalkeeping from Seitz and Rowe turned away some nice opportunities.  Otherwise, it was the final ball that seemed to let both teams down again and again.  Plenty of running up and down the pitch with most attacks going begging.

It looked like Bruce Arena had the gameplan correct though as he held important Galaxy players on the bench to start.  With the game still scoreless in the 74th minute he introduced Gyasi Zardes and Giovani Dos Santos to spark the Galaxy.  The effect was immediate as the home side looked the stronger over the final minutes and into overtime.  Los Angeles finally would break the scoreless tie in the first overtime period as Gyasi Zardes slipped a pass to Dos Santos sprinting into the Dallas backline.

Giovani split the final two FCD defenders and was in on goal.  Keeper Chris Seitz came out to meet Dos Santos who was angling left and touched away from goal.  Seitz made the poor decision to go down clipping the Galaxy attacker and earning a penalty kick.  With Dos Santos moving away from goal Seitz could have stood big and waited for help as Dos Santos turned away. Mike Magee calmly finished the spot kick and it looked like the Galaxy were on their way heading into the second overtime period.

FC Dallas would not go quietly though as coach Oscar Pareja threw numbers forward.  With only four minutes to play Dallas earned a corner kick which Matt Hedges headed home with authority to tie the game in front of the stunned home supporters.

Surely we were headed to penalties right? Wrong. FC Dallas had intentions on winning this thing.  In the 121st minute they earned another corner.  This time the hero was Victor Ulloa whose glancing header slipped into the near post for the 2-1 victory.  What a finish!

The dramatic comeback means FC Dallas will host the US Open Cup final welcoming the New England Revolution to Frisco on September 21st where they will attemp to win their 2nd US Open Cup trophy.
