FC Dallas rallies past LA Galaxy on late Akindele goal

Both FC Dallas and the LA Galaxy took the field Saturday night in Frisco missing key players due to injury.  Dallas was missing central defenders Zach Loyd and Matt Hedges while the Galaxy were missing attackers Robbie Keane and Jose Villareal.  Who would have substitutes rise to the occasion as the two MLS Western Conference powers faced off?

The two sides jousted back and forth over the opening twenty minutes before the home team generated the first big chance of the night.  A long throw was not dealt with well by the Galaxy defense allowing Ryan Hollingshead to pick the ball inside the penalty area.  After a nifty cut back he fired low at tihe near post from ten yards.  The shot beat keeper Jaime Penedo but pinged off the outside of the post and out for a goal kick.

Los Angeles had managed to keep the dynamic Fabian Castillo fairly quiet for most of the first half until the final minutes when Castillo finally got a good chance.  After cutting inside the speedy Colombian curled a right footer destined for the back side netting.  Penedo was up to the task as he dove and pushed the shot away.

Soon after it looked like the Galaxy had grabbed the lead after a Moises Hernandez foul.  The free kick was swung into the box where a Dallas defender won the initial header.  Ignacio Magante pounced on the loose ball and fired past Dan Kennedy into the Dallas net.  The linesman flagged offside as a Galaxy attacker was standing in front of Kennedy in an offside position obstructing his view.  No goal despite the colorful language from Galaxy coach Bruce Arena.

Fabian Castillo got one last chance just before halftime as he broke through the Galaxy defense.  Once again Penedo showed why he is quickly becoming one of the more respected goalkeepers in MLS as he parried the shot away keeping the game scoreless to halftime.

FCD Coach Oscar Pereja introduced 2014 rookie of the year Tesho Akindele to start the second half and the potent Dallas attack got even more dynamic.  Could the Galaxy defense hold out and get an impressive road result?

After basically no offense the entire evening the Galaxy grabbed the lead in the 55th off a corner kick.  Gyasi Zardes won the header putting the ball in off the back post past the flailing Dan Kennedy.  1-0 to the visitors completely against the run of play.

Frustration was growing as FC Dallas were wasting chance after chance until finally a bit of magic from the FCD number ten.  Mauro Diaz stopped at the top of the Galaxy penalty area and lifted the best scoop you will see all year just behind the Galaxy defense.  Blas Perez raced and chested around Penedo and scored into the empty net.  Just a great goal.  All even with fifteen minutes to play.

Enough time for FC Dallas to get the winner.  As Mauro Diaz and Fabian Castillo attacked down the right side, the Galaxy completely forgot about their left side.  A long switch from Diaz to Tesho Akindele found the forward with a ton of time and space.  He collected himself and fired from fifteen yards into the the far side netting. Perfectly placed.

It was another deserving win for FC Dallas as they stay atop the MLS Western Conference.  They'll welcome New York to Frisco next weekend before heading out on a long road trip.
