FC Dallas wins wild showdown with Houston Dynamo

Nothing short of a wild one like this should be expected when hated rivals FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo meet on the pitch.  Unfortunately, the super brains with the MLS have decided that the heated rivals should only play one time this season.  How silly is that?

Anyway, Sunday was about as entertaining a soccer game as you will get.  The two sides went back and forth at each other at break-neck speed.  Controversy.  Five balls in the back of the net.  A last minute winner from the home side.  And a most whiny Houston Dynamo coach afterwards.

Houston should have been ahead on 20 minutes but Giles Barnes chose to shoot instead of pass to the wide open Will Bruin.  The open forward stood with his hands in the air in front of the empty net as Barnes rolled it straight to Dallas keeper Raul Fernandez.  From there it looked like it was going to be a long day for the visiting Dynamo though.

FC Dallas struck twice within 3 minutes both off set pieces.  A long freekick was headed home by George John to send the home fans into a frenzy.  Then just a couple minutes later Andrew Jacobson volleyed home a corner kick to make it 2-0.  It should have been 3-0 just before halftime as Jackson got behind the Houston defense and chipped home.  The play was ruled offside despite replays showing it was a good goal.

The Dynamo set about the second half attempting to get back into the game.  It took 30 minutes but Houston finally got on the board.  Dallas defender Michel failed to deal with a ball deep in the penalty area and the visitors punished him as Andrew Driver blasted in off the crossbar.  Houston sprung to life and the Dynamo tied the game minutes later as Bread Davis curled home a spilled ball by Fernandez.

The drama was far from over.  FC Dallas answered right back grabbing the winner in the 90th minute.  Michel played a perfect ball to the backpost that just cleared a Houston defender where Kenny Cooper tried to head home.  Instead the ball bounced off Cooper's arm and he poked the ball into the Dynamo goal.  Replays showed the ball off the arm, but in real time it was not seen at all.  FC Dallas won the Texas Derby 3-2 in wild fashion.

“It just feels great to beat them,” Kenny Cooper said. “The team’s worked really hard this week, we spent a lot of time training and doing videos. Schellas and the staff really prepared us well for the game, so it’s great to get a win.”

After the game a childish Houston Coach Dominic Kinnear whined about players going down easily in the match.  Really quite childish from the losing coach as both sides claimed fouls the same way all afternoon.

The win leaves FC Dallas on six points from their three matches and at the top of the MLS Western Conference.
