FC Dallas won the 2016 US Open Cup, beating the New England Revolution 4-2 in Frisco Tuesday night.  The win guarantees a spot in the 2017-18 CONCACAF Champions League for FCD.  Oscar Pareja’s side wanted this one no doubt.  They even rested stars Mauro Diaz and Michael Barrios on the weekend do they would be fresh for the Final.

The game started well for New England when Juan Agudelo took a Gershon Koffie pass, turned and bent a nice shot past Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.  The stunned FCD crowd of almost 17,000 had barely even settled in.

But the lead would be short lived as Dallas was back on level terms less than ten minutes later.   Max Urruti got on the end of a perfect pass from Mauro Diaz and buried a shot to the bottom right corner of the New England goal. It would be the first of three helpers from Diaz on the night.

NE would totally blow a set piece as the hosts would double the lead in the 40th minute through Matt Hedges.  After the Revs cleared a free kick they failed to push out quickly enough and Diaz floated in a perfect ball for Hedges to power home with his head.

Things would spiral downward for the visitors as Dallas padded its lead deep into first-half injury time from the penalty spot after Jose Goncalves pulled Hedges down in the area.  Mauro Diaz converted from the spot despite Knighton guessing the right way..

A midfield turnover by New England in the 62nd minute led to Urruit's second goal, as the former Portland Timbers' striker latched onto a through ball from Diaz, took three touches and fired a right-footed shot past Knighton. The game was settled.

Credit to New England though as they didn’t roll over.  They continued to fight despite the three goal deficit.  Juan Agudelo scored again in the 73rd minute after finding himself alone at the far post from a Teal Bunbury cross and Revolution had a glimmer of hope. The FC Dallas squad would have none of a comeback though as they locked down and saw out the victory.

Thus, the best team in MLS claimed the US Open Cup title. FC Dallas is still on track to potentially win a treble of United States' trophies if they can win Major League Soccer's Supporters' Shield and navigate the way to an MLS Cup title in the playoffs.
