FC Dallas slips past Vancouver on late PK

Making their first playoff appearance since 2011 FC Dallas got past the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 to advance to the MLS Western Conference semifinals. It almost became a tale of two halves Wednesday night in the MLS Western Conference 4-5 playoff matchup.  FC Dallas dominated the opening 45 minutes en route to a 1-0 lead.  Vancouver evened up play and evened up the match in the 2nd half, but a late handball call awarded FCD the winning penalty kick in the dying minutes.

The first half was all one way traffic as the home side bossed the match.  Mauro Diaz returned to the starting lineup from a lengthy injury absence to lead an inspired performance.  The Whitecaps could barely string 3 or 4 passes together as Dallas won back possession almost immediately.

FCD fnally got their deserved lead late in the half when Mauro Diaz took a long throw in near midfield, broke free on a goalward run before playing right to Tesho Akindele.  The rookie took a touch and finished across the goal to the far post past the sprawling David Ousted.  Could the home side navigate the final 45 and grab a spot against the Seattle Sounders in the next round?

Vancouver came out after the break with a renewed vigor.  They knew their task and set about after the tying goal.  Pedro Morales signaled the Whitecaps' intent by curling a freekick off the Dallas crossbar just minutes into the 2nd half.  They were rewarded in the 64th when Erik Hurtado put home a loose ball in front of the Dallas goal.  Tie match with half an hour to decide a winner.

Unfortunately, the referee would have a major impact on deciding the match rather than the players themselves.  Ref Mark Geiger would award FCD a penalty decision in the 82nd minute as he called a handball on Kendall Waston.  A long throw in bounced in front of Waston who had his arm slightly away from his body.  The ball would have bounded by him and into a dangerous area of the penalty box but was blocked by Waston's arm as he tried to pull it into his body.  Before he could get his arm out of the way the ball was blocked and fell to Waston's feet where he cleared.  Tough call but after watching it probably correct.

Michel expertly curled the penalty kick home for the winning goal.  It was a hard pill to swallow for the Whitecaps who felt they deserved better.

Next up for FC Dallas is a semifinal meeting with the powerful Seattle Sounders in a two leg series.  Dallas will host the Sounders Sunday night in Frisco.
