Well to say these two teams don't like each other would be an understatement. Last year FC Dallas eliminatd Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference semifinals after a two leg series full of fireworks. RSL got a bit of revenge Saturday night at Rio Tinto as they defeated a shorthanded FC Dallas side 2-0.
Dallas was without captain Daniel Hernandez and then lost centermid Jacobson to injury after only 30 minutes. The absences in the central midfield were evident as Salt Lake bossed possession. Unfortunately it would be a mistake from one of the best goalkeepers in the entire MLS that would open up the scoring. Kevin Hartman misread the spin on a dipping free kick from RSL's Andy Williams and watched helplessly as the ball dribbled out of his grip and into the goal.
FC Dallas would not be able to recover. RSL did a good job of keeping the red-hot Brek Shea under wraps and the visitors were rarely dangerous. The golden opportunity for Dallas came late on as Jackson got in behind the defense and sent a ball rolling towards goal that looke destined to score. At the last second Chris Wingert slid in and saved the goal and the win. A stoppage time goal would provide the 2-0 margin. The two sides meet again on Tuesday at Pizza Hut Park in a US Open Cup match.
