Friday marked the end to non-district soccer play around most of North Texas as Flower Mound Marcus traveled to Keller to face off against Fossil Ridge High School. Both teams were looking for a final tuneup before opening the tough district seasons where both should be in the mix near the top of their respective districts.

The visitors wasted no time in putting their stamp on the contest.  A long throw led to a Marcus corner kick in the 4th minute of play.  The ball was swung into the near post before the Marcus runner got there, but the easy clearing header was muffed by the near post defender deflecting past the surprised keeper and into the net for an own goal.

Only a couple of minutes later and the lead was doubled. A poor clearance was collected at the top of the Fossil penalty area by Matthew Heffernan where he cut around a defender and fired low into the net. Marcus in complete control two goals up after only seven minutes of play.

It was always going to be a tall order for Keller Fossil Ridge with senior captain Matthew Nuss out due to strep throat but the hill was looking too large to climb right off the bat.   Fossil were frustrated by the poor start and the result were several hard fouls over the next ten minutes if play. The fouling slowed the Marcus momentum and evened up the flow of play.

At the midway point of the half the Marcus coach subbed the whole lineup basically. Between the hard fouls and the goofy subs the Marcus flow was lost with the visitors not threatening at all the rest of the half.  The next good chance fell to Fossil Ridge. Noah Briton got loose at the top of the visitor's penalty box with a quality chance to score.  Marcus keeper Dalton Loyd raced out to make a nice save and preserve the two goal lead to the break.

Marcus opened the second half with a nice header on goal that was saved. After that the next fifteen minutes belonged to Fossil Ridge as they desperately tried to find a way back into the match.  A few half chances went unrewarded and suddenly the half was ticking away.  Neither side would find another goal as FM Marcus would see out the shutout victory.

The lesson for the night is you can't fall behind a solid team by two goals early and expect to be successful. Flower Mound Marcus 2 Keller Fossil Ridge 0
