The Keller Fossil Ridge girls soccer team has been the talk of the tough District 7-5A. The Panthers (14-4-1, 10-1-1) beat Coppel both times and split their games with powerful Southlake.

Fossil Ridge have two matches to play and currently lead Southlake by three points. But instead of focusing on the point breakdown and tiebreaker scenarios, the Panthers are aiming to wrap up a championship by force.

"I've told them we just need to win," Fossil Ridge coach Dorothy Ortiz said. "We want to be the ones who will decide our own fate. We don't want anyone else to do that for us. We're hoping to finish something special this year, win district and make a run in the playoffs."

The Panthers still have to play Denton Guyer and Keller, teams fighting for the district's final playoff position.

"They have a lot to play for," Ortiz said. "And when you become the first-place team like we are, everyone wants to beat you."

But Ortiz is confident in her team.

"We have a great mix of girls, a good group of seniors that have been playing together for a long time," Ortiz said. "They have big goals and want to accomplish them for the team and the community."
