Keller Fossil Ridge slips past Keller on early goal

Keller came to Fossil Ridge Friday night needing a good result as they were trying to hold onto a playoff spot in District 4-5A.  Fossil on the other hand, were looking to keep pace or possibly pass Richland for the district lead.

Patrick Nuss signaled Fossil Ridge's intentions for the evening as in the third minute he rifled a volley from thirty yards out that forced a diving save from the Keller goalkeeper .  Six minutes later they had the lead thanks to some lax Keller defending.  Somehow Keller allowed the always dangerous Anthony Powell to receive a ball ten yards from goal with no defender in sight.  Powell wound up and fired off the crossbar, but the Keller defense stood around and let Ulices Pulido race in and finish past the shell-shocked keeper.

Keller almost answered right back though as they took advantage of a Fossil side that relaxed after taking the lead.  A perfect diagonal ball found a Keller striker on the backside.  He headed past the defender and lunged for the ball just before Fossil keeper Joaquin got there.  The flick found the post though and came back right int the waiting arms of Joaquin.

The close call brought Fossil Ridge back to life and Anthony Powell whistled a curling volley just wide as the crowd gasped.  But it was Keller who had the best chance of the end of the half as Camden Hoyle raced in off the left side one on one with Joaquin.  The keeper went down and watched as the shot rolled just wide of the post.  A clear missed chance that Keller would rue later in the match.

The second half got off to a wide open start.  Keller earned a corner kick off a long throw in, but it was Fossil Ridge that ended up with the scoring chance as they countered like mad.  Cody Seidel and Antony Powell found themselves two on one with a lone Keller defender.  Powell swerved off and took the ball on the dribble. Smartly, he did not pass to Seidel who was offside almost the entire attack.  Instead he cut right and fired low straight into the chest off the diving keeper who came out to close down the play.

The open play continued though as at the other end Keller saw a shot blocked by Noah Powell and then fired a shot just wide a couple of minutes later.  The visitors still trailed 1-0, but they definitely had the look of a side that could find a goal.  The Fossil Ridge defense shut the door though as they limited Keller to only a few long range shots over the last fifteen minutes.

The win moves Keller Fossil Ridge into a tie for first place in District 4-5A since Richland could only manage a draw with Southlake.  With four matches left in the season the district title is up for grabs.
