Fossil Ridge rallies past Keller Central

Friday was senior night at Keller Central as CFC faced off against rivals Fossil Ridge in an important District 3-6A clash. Both teams were guaranteed post season berths, but final positioning was still up for grabs.  What a match fans would be treated to. Easily the most entertaining District 3-6A match I have been to this season.

The home team got off to a good start in the 5th minute as a great left footed cross from Trenton Magryta found the darting run of Oscar Gasca whose glancing header flashed just wide of the post. Central stayed on the front foot as a set piece almost yielded the opening goal. A low ball from Callum Sutherland to the top of the eighteen found Abe DeAnda checking to. DeAnda stood hands on head as the low shot missed by inches.

Controversy in the 23rd minute as a nice through ball put Fossil in on goal. CFC keeper Joshua Starkey raced out of his box making a great tackle to clearly win the ball and stop the dangerous attack.  Somehow the referee judged a foul and showed Starkey a yellow card. Goofy! However, it was quite a collision causing Starkey to have to leave the match to be checked by doctors.  The news was bad as the star keeper would not be allowed to return to the match. Somehow CFC only had one keeper on the roster forcing junior midfielder Mario Sheward into goal.

From there the match really opened up as both teams had scoring chances soon after. Julian Bouchard whipped a shot just wide of the post and right after a goal line scramble in front of the Fossil get kept the game scoreless.

More action followed as a perfect Abe DeAnda corner kick was headed on frame by Alexei Gonzalez was destined for the net only to be cleared off the line at last second. Then Fossil quickly went the other way as Shaun Garcia ripped a low shot forcing Mario Sheward into a solid low save. Somehow the game would go to the break scoreless despite several quality scoring chances at each end.

Five minutes after the break Central got the goal they deserved.  A great cross from Marshall Dickson was met by Oscar Gasca who powered home the header from close range. Great goal.

The lead was short lived though as Fossil Ridge answered quickly. A long throw was flicked on from the near post by Matthew Nuss leaving Mason Wallak to blast past the helpless Mario Sheward to even the match. 1-1 with thirty minutes to play.

The visitors stayed on the front foot. Mario Sheward was forced into a couple of nice saves before finally Fossil would grab the lead.  A nice cross was volleyed home by Mason Wallak for his second goal of the night. 2-1 Fossil jumps in front.

Abe DeAnda had a good chance in the 70th minute to tie the match but his left footed full volley goes over from twenty yards out.  Time running out on a result that would most likely confirm a 4th place finish for Keller Central in District 3-6A.  Despite piling on the pressure over the final minutes, CFC would not be able to find the goal they needed and Fossil claimed the vital three points.  The results leave Fossil Ridge two points ahead of Keller HS heading into the final matchday in the fight for 2nd place while Central is stuck to 4th.
