Ten man Keller Fossil Ridge battle Southlake to a draw

The final week of the high school season always brings us big matches across North Texas and tonight was a huge one in District 4-5A as Southlake paid a visit to Keller Fossil Ridge.  The number two and three teams in the standings were fighting for much different things though.

Keller Fossil Ridge is in the midst of a dogfight with Richland for the district title as both teams sit tied on 27 points with two matches left.  Richland holds the tiebreaker between the two teams.  Meanwhile, Southlake is fighting for their playoff lives entering tied with Keller Central for third currently but only four points ahead of lowly sixth place.  Southlake, Keller, Central and Timber Creek are playing for two spots. Two will be staying home when the playoffs start next week.

For such an important match the game sure started slowly.  Neither side generated anything meaningful over the first ten minutes as the two fought it out in the midfield.   Then Bang.  Anthony Powell struck.

It was really a goal out of nothing and shows why Southlake is fighting for their playoff lives.  It all started with FR keeper Joaquin rolling a ball to left mid Matt Wallack who launched a long ball to Powell.  Somehow Southlake left the most dangerous forward in the district 1v1 with no cover.  Powell cut inside and easily beat the lone defender.  He raced in on goal from there and finished with ease.  Way, way too easy.

Southlake crumbled from there.  Only a minute later it was almost 2-0 as DJ Trutza was left all alone in the midfield.  He fired from 25 yards out forcing Dragon keeper Patrick Leal to stretch and make a fingertip save.  Leal couldn't hang on though and the ball rolled onto the post and dribbled on the goal line before he gathered it in.

Matt Wallack had the next good chance in the 18th minute as he cut inside and rifled his shot off the left post.  It was all Fossil Ridge until an injury stoppage to Noah Powell killed their momentum.  The two minute delay allowed Southlake to organize and regain their composure.

The next ten minutes were even-Steven, but soon Fossil Ridge showed why they are at the top of the district as they took back control.  Noah Powell made a forty yard run right down the middle of the field.  Not a Southlake player to be seen.  He got to the top of the box before laying it off to his brother Anthony.  Patrick Leal was up to the task though as he raced out and stuffed the shot.  A minute later Powell forced Leal into another diving save.

The game was still only 1-0.  Would Fossil Ridge come to pay for the missed chances?

A dangerous free kick almost got the game tied with six minutes to go in the first  half.  The low near post ball forced a save out of Joaquin and his defense cleared the loose ball.  Then came a hugely pivotal play.  Noah Powell was defending in the FR corner and had a chance to clear the ball out of play and end the danger.

Instead he didn't and ended up fouling the the Southlake player.  Then as the Dragon player was still on the ground Powell deliberately kicked him for all to see.  Should have been an obvious red card, but the referee only showed yellow.  It didn't matter though as Powell would last barely twenty seconds of the second half.

The game went to the break 1-0 to Keller Fossil Ridge.

Twenty seconds into the second half Noah Powell was off.  A reckless slide tackle from behind earned him his second yellow.  Terribly undisciplined.  Would it cost his team as they were now forced to play the entire second half with ten?

Yes, they would pay dearly.  The ensuing free kick was allowed to bounce at the near post where it took a deflection and ended up in the net.  Tie game and suddenly Southlake had their tails up in a match they really should have been a couple goals down in.

And in the 43rd minute Southlake was ahead as a low shot across the face of goal was deflected into his own net by a Ridge defender.  Just like that the entire match flipped in the span of three minutes.  Did Ridge have the fortitude to recover?

They fought right back and should have had the match even at two in the 46th. Somehow the Southlake defense allowed a throw in at midfield to turn into a break away for Anthony Powell.  He raced in on goal and tried to chip the keeper but his flick went just wide of the open goal.

In the 53rd minute that bad Southlake defense reared it's ugly head again.  A complete goal out of nothing once again.  The ball was laid back by the Fossil Ridge defense to keeper Joaquin who launched a fifty yard ball out of his own penalty area.

Somehow, again, the Southlake defense was completely out of position.  Coach Greg Oglesby stood with his hands on his head as the ball flew over the defenders and Anthony Powell ran onto it.  Powell flew down the left wing before cutting inside to cooly finish.  2-2

Minutes later Dragon keeper Patrick Leal made a fantastic play to deny Powell one again.  A perfect pass from Cody Seidel freed Anthony again to race in on goal.  This time Leal smothered him as he tried to go around him.  Fossil Ridge were a man down but you sure couldn't tell.

Despite the man advantage, Oglesby was clearly trying to slow the game down as the clock rolled under ten minutes.  A tie seemed to be fine with him as he made substitutions at almost every ball out of play. Fossil Ridge really should have won it in the 75th minute as a loose free kick in the Dragon area fell perfectly for Matt Wallack at the six.  The crowd groaned as he fired his volley over the crossbar though.

In the end Southlake were able to get out of town with an important draw while Fossil Ridge pretty much saw their district title hopes shrink drastically.  The point leaves Southlake alone in 3rd on 20 points with a match to play a single point ahead of Keller Central.

Meanwhile, Fossil Ridge falls two points behind Richland who will only need a tie in their final game Friday to claim the district title.
