Keller Fossil Ridge wins at Southlake 2-1

Friday presented a clash of two of the top squads in District 4-5A as the season approaches the halfway point.  One side, Southlake, is expected to be at the top.  Keller Fossil Ridge, on the other hand, has been one of the clear surprises of the first two months of 2014.

Both teams were coming off poor results midweek as Southlake lost at Keller 2-0 while Fossil suffered a shock draw with lowly Haltom.  It just made Friday night's match even more important.

Southlake started on the front foot and nearly had the lead in the 3rd minute but a shot off a corner kick whizzed high over the bar from ten yards out.  Despite the strong start from the home side, danger is only a moment away with Anthony Powell up top for Ridge.  If Southlake could handle Powell they would most likely end the night with a good result.

Fossil Ridge fought back as a shot from a corner kick of their own rolled just wide of the right post.  Set pieces were providing the only real chances for either team in the opening half hour as both defenses were doing a solid job of halting any good attacks from the run of play.

The big moment of the opening half came in the 31st minute when Fossil Ridge keeper Joaquin gathered a long Southlake free kick and launched a sixty yard punt the other way.  Anthony Powell took advantage of a misplay from the Southlake defender and found himself in on goal.  Just as he was about to hit his shot the same defender bundled into the back of Powell sending him to the turf as the disturbed shot rolled weakly wide.  Definitely potential for a penalty.  A 60/40 call that Keller Fossil Ridge did not get despite the loud protests from players and fans.

The remainder of the opening half provided no more drama and the game went to the break scoreless.

Southlake almost jumped ahead five minutes into the second half as a good diagonal ball broke down the Fossil defense.  The Dragons left midfielder raced in on the back post, but his shot fluttered just high and wide.

In the 48th Fossil Ridge shocked the home crowd and jumped in front.  Anthony Powell dribbled about four Southlake players in the penalty area before being dropped.  Once again the referee waved play on and Fossil kept the attack with a perfect cross to Matt Wallak who looked sure to score.  Out of nowhere Southlake keeper Patrick Leal flew across the face of goal and blocked the shot from close range.  The rebound rolled to the top of the penalty area where Patrick Nuss was waiting.  Nuss calmly rifled a perfectly placed shot low into the right corner of the net.

All the pressure fell to Southlake who were suddenly in danger of falling five points behind Keller Fossil Ridge in the standings.  They didn't respond well to giving up the goal though as the visitors were taking clear control of the match.

Would Southlake answer back?  That question was answered fairly quickly as Fossil made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute.  A long Cody Seidel free kick was put right into the mixer.   The keeper Patrick Leal left his line and Anthony Powell out jumped everyone flicking the header into the empty net.

As the clock wound under ten minutes the home side found a glimmer of hope.  With six minutes to go Riley Parrish blasted his team back into the match as his laser from twenty yards out found the top left corner of the net pas the outstretched Joaquin.  Could Southlake  make the miracle comeback?

Fossil Ridge was inviting the pressure upon them dropping severely deep defensively.  Three minutes to go and the Dragons were pushing hard.  Would they get their reward?  Thirty seconds to go and Southlake earned a free kick right at the edge of the eighteen.  Joaquin parried the ball wide and Fossil had the 2-1 victory.

In the end, Southlake suffered their second consecutive loss and fell almost two games behind the leaders with eight district games remaining.  As for Keller Fossil Ridge...... well if you weren't a believer before tonight you certainly should be now.
