Fort Worth Vaqueros welcome Ryutsu-Keizai University of Japan for friendly

Saturday morning afforded us our first look at the 2015 Fort Worth Vaqueros side.  They were facing off against Ryutsu-Keizai University of Japan.  Ryutsu were in town for Dallas Cup XXXVI where the took part in the prestigious Super Group.  In my opinion they were one of the best sides at the tournament beating defending champions River Plate and LA Galaxy Youth before bowing out to Everton on Wednesday afternoon.  Ryutsu-Keizai then went over and defeated SMU in a friendly on Thursday night.

As Ryutsu-Keizai were arriving in good form, the Fort Worth Vaqueros took the field for their first preseason match of 2015.  Two teams at very different places in fitness and form with the Vaqueros looking to work on tactics and player familiarity. The plans were for three thirty minute periods on the day.

The first big chance fell to Ryutsu-Keizai as Tomu Katayama put a low cross through the FW penalty area.  A nice dummy from Yutaro Sato left the ball to run for Yuki Miyauchi to meet with a first time strike from ten yards out.  Vaqueros keeper Arturo Sanchez Sanmiguel was up to the task as he smartly pushed the strike aside.  It wasn't all one way traffic though as Nestor Martinez fired a shot over the crossbar from distance and then the team earned a corner a couple of minutes later.

Ryutsu-Keizai got on the board in the 29th minute as a ball in behind put Tomu Katayama in on goal.  He calmly cut the onrushing Sanmiguel before curling into the net.  Claims for offside from the Vaqueros went unheard.

The second thirty minute period saw the Vaqueros make several changes to their eleven.  The center mid showed up much better for the Fort Worth side after the restart,  but the technical prowess of the Japanese would still win out.  Yuki Miyauchi forced a good sliding intervention from new FW keeper Raul Segovia while minutes later Yutaro Sato fired just over the crossbar from 25 yards out.  In the 44th Segovia made another fine diving save to turn away a Shuhei Hoshino free kick.  The Vaqueros were able weather the storm and hold Ryutsu-Keizai off the scoreboard in the second period.

The Vaqueros produced their best chance of the match in the 68th minute as a defensive mistake from the Japanese allowed a FWV forward to race away.  The Ryutsu keeper came out to the top of the eighteen and made a nice save to thwart the danger.  A few minutes later the boys from Japan wasted a monster opportunity after Teppei Ozaki easily rounded the Vaqueros central defender before firing a low shot at goal.  The ball came squarely off the right post and rebounded straight back to Ozaki who had a gaping net waiting.  He opted for power rather than just slotting into the empty net and instead blasted over the crossbar.

There were no more goals in the final fifteen minutes as the friendly finished with both sides posing together for photographs and the Vaqueros presenting their Japanese guests with t-shirts.  It was a very beneficial scrimmage for the Fort Worth team who look to be a more dynamic squad than last year.  The Vaqueros open the NPSL season away to Dallas City on May 8th.
