Girls District 4-5A playoff spots up for grabs

With the season winding down just a few points separate the top five teams. District 4-5A and the playoff seedings are up for grabs. Ruth Knight has experienced many competitive district races in her 29 years coaching Arlington Martin's girls team.  North Crowley leads 4-5A, followed by Martin. Fort Worth Paschal, Arlington High and Weatherford are also fighting for playoff position.

"It has gone game by game, with the points and standings shifting every night," Knight said. "It's been a crazy district this year. "

Martin (10-8-4, 6-1-3 in 4-5A for 21 points) defeated Arlington Sam Houston 3-0 Wednesday, and leader North Crowley (11-3-5, 6-0-4 22 points) beat Arlington Bowie 2-1 to set up a monster matchup tonight. The North Crowley Panthers host the Warriors, with a district championship possibly on the line.

"If we lose one game, we could easily drop to third," North Crowley coach Alan Ludington said. "There is a good amount of pressure. The girls have been working hard. They have done well this season, and if we can maintain what we have been doing, we will have a good shot."

In the teams' first meeting, Martin and North Crowley tied 1-1. Martin also has to play Weatherford and Paschal again.

"If we can go after everybody, like we did in our last game against Arlington, we will do well," Knight said.

Ludington hopes his players can stay consistent going into tonight's big game. "I can't predict how Martin will play," he said. "We did a great job working as a team in the first game against them. That's the main thing. If you falter even a little bit, it will cost you against a team like Martin."

Knight has come out on top in many of her tight championship races. "I can't remember the last time Martin didn't win district," Ludington said. "I don't want to put too much pressure on my players, so we don't talk about winning district a lot. We have to stay focused, not look ahead. We will do the best we can."

While senior Amber Galvan leads North Crowley's scoring with 13 goals this season, Ludington said his whole team contributes.  "We've got a bunch of girls out there who do a lot for us," he said. "Sometimes that doesn't show up on the stat sheet."
