Gold Cup a huge success at Cowboys Stadium as Mexico and Costa Rica cruise

To say the atmosphere at Cowboys Stadium was electric would be an understatement.  The opening two matches of the 2011 Gold Cup went off Sunday evening as a rousing success.  Over 80,000 fans packed into the stadium and the soccer did not disappoint.

The opening game pitted Costa Rica against an overmatched side from Cuba.  The Cubans entered the match with 5 shutouts in their last 6 matches, but their defense was no match for the fast Costa Rican attack.  Once Costa Rica discovered they could go in behind the Cuba defense easily it was all over.  The left side of the Cuba defense was simply terrible and Costa Rica made them pay repeatedly.  By the end of the night the scoreline was 5-0 to Costa Rica and truthfully it wasn't even that close.

Then came the nightcap and the game most of the crowd had come to see.  Mexico fans turned out in the thousands to see their stars like Chicharito, Giovani dos Santos and Rafa Marquez take on El Salvador.

El Salvador fought valiantly in the opening half of play.  Rodolfo Zelaya and Andres Flores were giving the Mexico defense fits and Mexico had trouble getting much started in the attack.  The game went to halftime scoreless.

That's where Mexico made some clear adjustments and the match changed completely.  They came out much more direct in the second half of play as Mexico looked to go in behind the El Salvador defense.  The strategy worked as El Salvador was uncomfortable once they were turned.

The flood gates opened in the 55th minute as Efrain Juarez got the first.  He got in behind the defense and put a close range shot at goal as he was falling down.  El Salvador keeper Miguel Montes made the initial save but the rebound went off the falling Juarez and into the net.

The crowd went crazy and Mexico scored 3 more goals in the next ten minutes as El Salvador were simply overwhelmed.  Chicharito claimed the first of his goals in the 60th minute when he got loose on a breakaway.  Only minutes later he would nod home a close range header.

Hernandez's final goal came on a penalty kick when he sent a soft chip right down the middle as the keeper dove to the side.  The kick was awarded after Marvin Gonzalez was handed a red card for a reckless foul on Hernandez, drawing boos from the majority of the 80,000 fans who were rooting for Mexico.
